Creating a Better Life: Stephanie’s Story

By Barbara Cash

I want to tell you about a wonderful woman who has granted CareStar the opportunity to provide her case management services.  Stephanie is a 29-year-old who demonstrates a sharp mind, wonderful smile, and a personality that draws others toward her.  Due to her diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy, she uses a wheel chair for mobility and sometimes lacks control of her arms and hands.

When I first met Stephanie, she had been attending a fine community-based program but often expressed being uncomfortable and not fitting in. She expressed a desire to change programs and asked to interview me as a possible new case manager.  She smiled throughout the entire interview!  I explained further options regarding her Waiver services. Since that interview, Stephanie's team of support has rallied to accomplish the following...

- Explore self-directed services
- Advocate for a personal emergency system which does not require a land line
- Set up interviews with new waiver providers as well as new providers for her Medicaid Prior Authorized services

As you can see, Stephanie is now taking the steps to take charge of her own life.  She is currently pursuing a degree in social work from Indiana University while volunteering for the Abilities Consignment Shop in Richmond, Indiana. This volunteer position has connected Stephanie with women who help her stand up and make choices that reflect her hopes and needs.  We are extremely pleased with the progress Stephanie has made in her life through CareStar's Case Management support, and we would be hard-pressed to find a more deserving individual of such fulfillment!

Do you know anyone like Stephanie who could utilize CareStar Case Management to help fulfill their hopes and needs? Please contact Barbara Cash, CareStar State Director or the author of this article (contact information below).

The fact that you have on-call supervisors to consult with after-hours has proven useful on at least one occasion. I can't begin to express how much reassurance it gave me to have our teams working together at that critical time.
