Getting the Most Out of Life
By Barbara Cash
May 25, 2011Matthew was nearly 21 years old when Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy disease ended his life. Though diagnosed at a young age, Matthew and his entire family pursued every passing moment of life with fervor. Anyone who had the opportunity to meet Matthew quickly saw his enthusiasm for life as he displayed his intelligence, wit, sensitivity to others, and his demand for a humorous attitude rather than gloom while in his company.
During the progression of Matthew’s disease the entire family soldiered on, modifying their home and vehicle for wheelchair access not only for Matthew, but also for his disabled brother. After high school graduation, Matthew enrolled into a local college to study accounting. His first semester was a success, while the second semester showed signs of rapid disease progression which caused increasing struggles and pain. The disease forced Matthew to return home.
Typical of Matthew’s personality, he continued to pursue a fulfilling life despite his struggle. He and his family enjoyed venturing into the community, shopping for groceries, and attending sporting events and movies. Although he fought incredibly hard, Matthew’s immune system finally weakened until it prohibited any ambulation.
Matthew and his family are an extraordinary example of fortitude. They created memories and valued family life even throughout the monumental challenges they faced.
We all played a significant part in this family’s memory of Matthew. The appropriate allocation and monitoring of benefits through the Medicaid system provided the medically necessary healthcare and family supports in Matthew’s life.

The fact that you have on-call supervisors to consult with after-hours has proven useful on at least one occasion. I can't begin to express how much reassurance it gave me to have our teams working together at that critical time.
