INDEPENDENT LIVING SERVICES — Older Blind and Visually liiipaired
The following. information is provided to let you know about a very important, yet often overlooked benefit to our older citizens under Title VII, Chapter 2, also known as the Older Blind Act. This pro’ am is particularly helpfUl to folks with Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, and VictjiuS of a cerebral vascular accident that affected vision.
The Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission awarded a grant to the Southeast Ohio Sight Center in Lancaster to provide services to individuals age 55 and older who are Jegally blind or have a progressive eye disorder leading to le2al blindness. Services are provided free of charge. However, individual participation to pay a poition of the costs is encouraged for those who wish contribute to their own program.
The goal of the program is to promote independent living for eligible participants with visual impainuents. Individuals living in a nursing home-care facility are not eligible to receive services under Title VII, Chapter 2. Services oflered include an in-home evaluation, followed up with the necessary visual aids, magnifiers, adaptive equipment, and training by a Rehabilitation Teacher.
By helping the blind or severely visually impaired to become more self sufficient in daily living activities we hope to create a safer home, increase the length of time they are able to care for themselves, and improve their overall quality of life.
