Advocacy

  • Advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities by influencing public policy on local, state and national legislative issues.
  • Assisting individuals with disabilities or family members to become self-advocates through one-on-one or group training sessions.

ADA/Accessibility Services

  • Program and Facility Evaluations: Providing consultation and customized workshops on the mandates of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) as well as accessibility evaluations of facilities and programs to ensure compliance with the ADA.
  • Disability Awareness Training Workshops: Offering an opportunity to gain a better understanding of people with disabilities and disability related issues.
  • TTY Training: Providing training on how to handle TTY calls promptly and effectively.

  • Providing up-to-date information on adaptive equipment, transportation, accessible housing and other issues, as well as assisting individuals access resources.

Peer Support Program

  • Individual Peer Support Services: Providing consulting and support services to enhance an individual's independence.
  • Independent Living Skills Evaluation: Assessing a person's needs and abilities as they relate to living an independent, self-directed lifestyle.
  • Independent Living Skills Training: Teaching independent living skills necessary for persons with disabilities to create or maintain independent lifestyles.
  • Peer Consulting: Matching a trained volunteer peer consultant with a person who has a disability to share experiences, knowledge and skills.
  • All Disability Support Group: Sharing information through individual life experiences and guest presentations.

Personal Care Assistance Program

  • Assisting people with severe physical disabilities in their application for Personal Care Assistance (PCA) funds. SIL is a facility representative for the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission.

Transitional Education Program

  • Assisting students with disabilities in making a smooth transition from school to work and/or higher education

Assistance We Provide:

 

Temporary Financial Assistance -  

Emergency funds for food, housing and utilities may be provided to veterans and/or their dependents. Applications for financial assistance are taken by appointments on Tuesday - Thursday from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. For more information contact the Veterans' Service Office.

 

VA Benefits -  

There are two very well trained and accredited Veteran Service Officers who will assist the veteran and his or her dependent in filing for the following VA benefits: service-connected compensation, non-service connected disability pension, survivor's pension, death and burial benefits, VA health care enrollment, headstones, education, home loan guarantee certificates, vocational rehabilitation, upgrading or correcting DD 214's.

 

Transportation to VA Medical Facilities -  

The Veterans' Service Office has the capabilities of transporting veterans that are without means to and from their VA appointments. You must schedule all trips two weeks in advance and you must NOT have to depend on others to help you in and out of the county vehicle.

 

Flags and Grave Markers  

Each cemetery handles the placement of the flags and markers independently, but the Veterans' Service Office is happy to provide a flag and marker to family members who wish to mark the grave themselves.
