WEBSITE; http://www.societyhelps.org/index.shtml

The Society for Rehabilitation is a private nonprofit organization, which has been responsive to community needs throughout its history. The Society was established in 1949 to meet the needs of a small group of physically handicapped school-aged children who were unable to attend regular school classes. Along with starting a special class for these children, the Society began to raise funds and organize volunteer efforts so that needed therapeutic services could be provided in Lake and Geauga Counties on a frequent and regular basis. The first services were provided by a speech therapist and physical therapist. An orthopedic clinic was held every six months.

In 1969 the Society moved to its present location in Mentor, Ohio, on land donated by the Diamond Shamrock Company. Since that time services have expanded to include the following: Audiology, Occupational Therapy, Preschool Education, Social Services, Psychological Services, Adult Recreation, Parent Support Groups, Preschool Screening Services, Hearing Aid Dispensing, and Early Intervention Services. A licensed and qualified professional staff provides these services.

In 1969, five hundred and ten (510) individuals were served by the Society. During 2000, this number had increased to over five thousand (5,000).

Although the Society provides prevention, diagnostic, consultative and treatment programs to people of all ages, children continue to be the primary emphasis of all of the therapy programs. At this time, approximately 55% of the Society's clients are under the age of six years and 75% are below fifteen years of age.

The Society is governed by a Board of Directors and is officially designated as a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization. The agency was previously known as the Lake County Society for Rehabilitation of Children and Adults, as the Kerr-Brumbaugh Center and before that the Lake County Society for Crippled Children and Adults.

Donations, the United Way, grants, and fees for services fund the Society. There is a sliding fee scale, which is based upon financial need, and no one is denied our services based upon their ability to pay.
